How to prepare Current Affairs for UPSC Prelims

If anyone aspires to clear UPSC Prelims , preparing current affairs becomes a critical necessity. At least 40-45 questions in prelims are invariably asked from this section and if one has prepared well ,one can answer around 40 questions correctly. This can very well mean the difference between success and failure in this stage.

Now the question arises as to what is the most efficient way to prepare current affairs.I will share my way of preparing current affairs which worked well for me and all four times i was able to answer most of the questions from this section correctly.

I had basically three sources for preparation of current affairs-

1. The Hindu - one should make very brief notes from daily reading of the newspaper.Anything one feels relevant and important from prelims point of view should be jotted down in a separate notebook. If you have not started doing it, you should start doing it right now.
For example - Names of CEOs/CMDs of PSUs or big corporations , new projects/programmes launched by GOI , international happenings (must see the location of places on atlas) etc.

2. Frontline Magazines - Go through frontline magazines from June 2008 onwards till Feb 2009 . You need not read all articles ,just see the areas covered and note down important points like where particular summits were held.,where civil war is going on etc etc.The aim should be to supplement your daily reading of newspaper and to cover any important area which you might have missed.I used to take two frontline magazines and devote 40-45 minutes to each and note down whatever i felt to be important from prelims points of view. One added advantage with Frontline is that with most of their articles, there is an accompanying map of the location which is very handy for prelims preparation as location based questions are frequently asked.

3.Spectrum current affairs which comes out in April should be read end to end to make sure that there is no loop hole.I used to write on the top of each page whatever i felt to be really important from that page and it also helped in quick revision.

I know many of the aspirants would still not be satisfied and would want to know about few more sources.India Year Book is very thick and in all these four years of appearing in prelims i did not go through the complete book. Many people do it ,so its your choice, but what i did was to refer New Vishal Publications summarised version of India Year Book which can be read from end to end and also revised quickly.Since the changes in India year book are very less ,so one can buy previous year's New Vishal India Year Book summarised version and read it now.Other than this
one should go through Manorama Year Book(latest) current affairs portion especially calendar of events ,both national and international and the section on India especially about the states. It will give maximum result within minimum time.
If one does at least this much ,current affairs should not be a problem .Please feel free to post your questions in comments .

Hi dear!!

First of all, let me thank you for such voluntary work!!

Right now, I am 19 years old, but in my final year of Graduation (Comp. Sci.) from Mumbai. The problem I face here is regarding Study Materials. I have to travel miles to search them. Actually, I am not in position to join classes due to some reasons. I am a regular reader of Competition Success since last 2 years. I also refer to Manorama Year books (which I find really useful) regularly. In newspapers, I read TOI and Employment News. I have decided to opt for Mathematics in my prelims as I am really comfortable with it, but having some doubts in the Mechanics section (as I am from SSC, HSC board pattern background).

I can't opt for Mathematics in my Mains (As suggested by my professors) as it has really hectic syllabus which won;t be much scoring. Thus, I have decided to opt for Psychology and Public Administration for my Mains. I have started studying Psychology with reference to the syllabus published in Employment News on December 6, 2008.
It will be really nice of you to provide some reference (notes) link, if you have, so that I get some support in my answers. Thanks for spending time to read all these things. Hope you help me!

Kanishka Vinod Kumar Khatri.

@Kanishka ... thx :) , its my pleasure ... dont worry too much about the material for this exam ,dont rush into things ...for now u shud be concentrating more on buiding ur general awareness by regular reading of newspaers,Manorama year book, and magazines like frontline ... develop gud habits that will pay u dividends in the long run... if u r going to have maths in prelims then i wud suggest u take maths in mains also ,but ultimately decision has to be made by u...dont go by scoring patterns,go by ur interest becoz in all subjects there r ppl who score very high and there are those who score poorly ...its the individual who clears this exam, not the subject per se ....u can refer the list of books for psychology that i have given in one of my posts on the subject ...all the best :)

hi abishek, well done man for ur great work. keep it up .
i m eying 4 ias 2010. is it advisable to go 4 coachin classes?
i m taking history as my 1st opt.sub & commerce as 2nd opt. sub.
is it postal service useful?
plz rply. on nishadolas@yahoo.in
gud day.

Abhishek said...

@nishadolas ... thx :)
coaching classes are gud in d sense that if u r totally clueless about a subject ,it will give u a sense of direction but the usefulness varies with individuals ... i took coaching 4 psychology and gs in vajiram and it helped me ... so if time n money are no constraints then coaching wud not be a bad idea ...but coaching by itself is guarantee of success ,i hv frends who hv cleared this exam without any coaching ,even postal guidance shud be okay i guess ...ultimately u have to decide :)

Abhishek said...

@Zeenia... well the answer to ur question lies within urself ... rather than thinking dat 'i m lazy' strat giving urself positive suggestions like 'i m very focused, very energetic and i will give this exam my best shot' etc ...this might seem silly but somehow worked for me to keep my spirits up wen d chips were down ...regarding d party ,well why not but even clearing mains will be an intermediate step as interview is dere n then d final result ...

Abhishek said...

@Ashim ...thanks yaar :)

Hey abhishek, these days i am finding most of my peers concentrated on prelims only. But what my perception is that on core areas like polity, modern India, geog, focus on mains exam and half of prelims prep will be done. The remaining preparation can be done in 1-2 months. Is my method of preparing GS viable or would you suggest me that I should focus entirely on prelims now....my current affairs knowledge is very poor but I have made diary of major news from Hindu and frontline (unfortunately only considering mains in mind)....

Murtaza said...

Hey Abhishek,

First of all thanks to the great community work you are doing by guiding the civil service aspirants. I am appearing for the civil service exams this year. This is my first attempt. I have taken Indian History as optionals for prelims and wish to take History and Public Administration as optionals for mains. I am a computer science Engineer. Hence, new to history. My current affairs is also poor considering the prep required for civil services. For prelims, (for history) I am referring Krishna Reddy (Tata mcgraw hills) and Agnihotri guides. And for GS I am referring the Tata mcgraw hill guide. I plan to cram these books properly for the prelims.. You think it should suffice ? Also, what things should I study keeping the mains in mind.. now ?

Abhishek said...

@Murtaza...thx ,i hope u have gone through my friend Trilochan's article on how to prepare history to get a gud idea ... to clear prelims ,u need to be very comfortable with ur optional subject(history in ur case) and a decent performance in GS ...just focus on ur studies and things will work out :) gud luck !!!

Abhishek said...

@Yogesh ... kindly go thru all relevant articles , i have not prepared as such 4 asstt.commandant exam but many aspirants clear it as the exam is on similar pattern as upsc prelims ...all d best :)

i am in a doubt that a rigorous preprn of 1 year can lead me success in the exam or nt???Is it impossible to clear IAS in first attempt??? please guide..

Thank u..Niru

Abhishek said...

@ Niru ... a well directed, sincere preparation of one year is gud enuf to clear all three stages of this exam and a fair number of candidates make it in their very first attempt ... so its not just about the number of attempts rather its more about how you attempt ...all d very best !!!

hi abhishek . ur blog is really very useful thankyou so much for the work. i just have some doubts.i'm appearing for may 09 prelims. if i can ignore biology, chemistry nd physics means not giving much importance to the subjects rather concentrtaing on general awareness, history geography, polity nd economy. will be that be ok. plz suggest

Abhishek said...

@ Sravani ... since u already know taht botany is not my area of expertise but still for any subject follow the syllabus and standard text books ,look up the last 10 years question papers to get an idea of what is being asked ...this shud be enuf to get started with botany ,next step might be joining a coaching institute or self-study depending on one's comfort level ...i will try if i can get someone to write abt botany as well ...all d best !!!

Abhishek said...

@ Kashyap ... u really never know wht the UPSC might ask ,so its better to be on d safe side and not leave any area completely ,but if there is time constraint then u shud stick to core areas and maybe deal very briefly with other areas ...for instance in general science mostly questions are asked from biology portion so u can afford to be little less focused on physics n chemistry but there is no guarantee dat qusetions will not be asked frm there .... :)

Abhishek said...

@ Afrin,Dr.Pankaj and Lakshmi ... please select optional based on ur interest and aptitude for the subject ...people clear the exam with all sorts of optionals,so for the right candidate optional is not d hindrance ...yes more guidance n resources wud be available 4 popular subjects but then competition in these subjects wud be that much more stiff .... all d best !!!

Bhavna Sharma said...

Hi Abhishek,

First of, many thanks for this wonderful voluntary work. I am sitting for prelims 2009 and due to extreme shortage of time(just started off with preparations one month back), have not enrolled for any coaching classes. Also, the 15year General studies papers that I am referring to show me that there were only 3 questions of current affairs in 2007 and some 13 in the year 2006, I see a huge contrast to what you are saying here. Please let me know if I am referring the wrong book.

Thanks in advance!
Bhavna Sharma

Bhavna Sharma said...

To add to the information, I am referring the 15 years solved papers published by arihant publications.

A quick response will be much appreciated.

Ackshat said...

Hi Abhishek,
this one is a very important blog for every civil services wannabe...
for current affairs reading THE HINDU ,FRONTLINE and MANORAMA YEAR BOOK WILL BE SUFFICIENT ENOUGH????

Ackshat said...

and as bhavna sharma has already ststed that inste????ad of 40-45 only 6-13 questions hav been asked in the previous papers.....
can the pattern be so much lop-sided every year

Dr.Pankaj said...

bhavna ji , let me correct u first.
there was 39 Questions from current events in 2007, 35 in 2008, 32 in 2006.So Currentevents and Geography (no. of Q always in 30's or 40's) are two vital subjects for GS.
Also if u have little time left, then do thorugh study of special issue on cureent affairs by some good magazine like chronicle. also a good material on current issues is given on UPSC PORTals Free magazine that can be downloaded at www.upscportal.com

Abhishek said...

@Bhavna and Ackshat ... believe me if my memory serves me right then dere are always 40-45 questions that can be solved easily if one is thorough with current affairs ...and in recent years the trend of asking more current based questions has only increased .... yes it may so happen that upsc may ask lot of questions frm history one year and next yera there might be hardly any questions frm history but as far as current affairs is concerned ,it is well worth d effort ...so prepare this section nicely ...all d best !!!
Thanks Dr.Pankaj for taking the initiative and answering the queries ...all d best to u too :)

Bhavna Sharma said...

I see a section named Miscellaneous in the book that I have referred, this section has sponsored some 34 questions in recent exams and the type of questions more or less look like current affairs and general knowledge stuff. Anyways, we are in sync now...

Thanks Abhishek and Dr. Pankaj Ji!

hey abhishek , congrats for cracking the prelims . Best of luck for your mains result. I basically wanna go for the IFS , but i know aspirants have to go through the same UPSC exams.
I am doing my MS in Mech Engg in the US. I plan to appear for UPSC in 2011.Though i took science after 10th , I have a great interest in Global Affairs . I follow the news passionately & have also follow reputed geopolitics fora. So history of the regions concerned [India & abroad ] comes along with it . As far as geography is concerned, i know the national flags, capitals & major cities of all main countries of the globe. Wikipedia is the greatest source for me . So is it safe to assume that this passion in history /geography will help me score in the exam with the above subjects as options???

Ishkee said...

Hi Abhishek,
I have been reading your posts for quite sometime. They are my favourites while resding for preparation materials on internet.
I am working in a software MNC and coz of this I am not able to dedicate much time to spend on reading newspapers in detail. I read Hindustan times daily but miss most of it due to lack of time.
Can u suggest something to overcome this hurdle?

Abhishek said...

@ mihirsamel ...i think since u r interested in these two subjects and passionate abt the subject matter ,so they shud be ur logical choices as optionals ... scoring high wud depend on how well u prepare these subjects and how u fare in the exam in relation to others with the same combination... all d best !!!

Abhishek said...

@Ishkee...thx :) , i can understand dat working in a mnc wud be leaving wid very less time , only thing i can suggest is better start reading The Hindu and keep making notes from it, coverage is much better from exam point of view in it than in TOI or HT ... just will urself to devote atleast 35-40 minutes everyday to newspaper reading,it will pay dividends big time ... all d best !!!

Hi Abhishek,

For preparation of GS History and Biology, I bought a book called Unique quintessance of General Studies 2009. This book basically was bought to prepare GS overall (as I was facing a real crunch of time...). However, as I see that you guys are recommending Spectrum's as the quick reference for Biology et al, can you give me some hint for the reputation of the book that I am currently referring? I want to study specific things only as the time is really less. Let know of your advice on whether I should buy spectrums now of read from the book I currently have.

I love reading your posts.. they are so informative :) As I'm a working professional so I opted for WizIQ Online Videos to Prepare for Bank PO/Clerical Written Examinations with my brother advice ... and after a week into it I feel online education helps us a lot :)

Can u plz guide what all sections in the newspapers/magazines should I emphasize upon to prepare for UPSC-Prelims, and also I would like to know that as I will attempt for prelims in 2014, from when should I start to collect the current affairs n important events from the newspapers/magazines ? Plz help as I m totally naive about the preparation method! Thankyou..
